about

The Kitchen Tape EP

Shortly before recording the Bare Along The Branches album I had been looking through some cassette tapes I had in a box in the loft and found one that had ‘Kitchen Tape’ scribed onto it in scratchy black lettering.

I looked out an old Sony Walkman that I had hung on to and upon listening to the tape there was something about the the lo-fi feel of the songs that I liked and I was instantly taken back to when we would play music around the kitchen table of our flat in Glasgow.

The moment of finding this tape would make me go on to use certain elements of tracks from the cassette in other songs ‘Lonely Boy’ (BATB album) and ‘She’s So Good’ (Compass album). A few lyric lines from Cure is what later gave birth to ‘She’s So Good’ and part of the chorus from ‘I’m the one’ went on to inform the chorus of ‘Lonely Boy’.

The other two songs would appear on my first album (Old Lovers Junkyard) some 15 years later from when this tape originated so this would be them in their earliest form most likely just shortly after having written them.

The four songs I believe were recorded onto a Philips N2213 automatic cassette recorder with everyone sat around the kitchen table in flat 113 Wilton Street, Glasgow. They are presented here pretty much as they sound on the original tape (mistakes and all) although we did try to get rid of some of the tape hiss and we faded out the track ‘I’m The One’ as the cassette ran out of tape and it ends abruptly on the original recording.

The recording would have been taped around 1999? Myself and Dave McGowan were living at Flat 2/1: 113 Wilton Street in Glasgow and Bob must have been over for a visit.

Thanks to Bob, Dave and the unknown drummer. Marco Rea for his help with the tape hiss and to Kenny Bates for the tapes.
